Great NAS with long awaited 2.5gbe update People are negatively reviewing this product because they haven’t done any research before purchasing.Yes - it is true that you must use Synology HDDs, as has been widely reported and publicly announced by Synology. However, I was able to get Synology Plus 16TB HDDs for $300 so I am not too upset that I had to use their HDDs. If it helps Synology better support/service their product, I’ll stick with their drives as long as they as similarly priced and spec’d (which in this case, they are).Other
Noisy Enclosue I purchased this to replace a DS218+, which I have outgrown, and has been running flawlessly since 2019 with no issues at all. I considered switching to UGREEN due to the HDD compatibility list. However, DSM 7.3 removed the HDD restrictions therefore I decided to stick with Synology. I am removing 1 star due to the quality of the enclosure. When my drives spin up, I can hear vibration in the ENCLOSURE. I am not speaking of the noise one usually hears from the HDD spinning. This noise is co
Works with any third party drive. A month ago, I would have rated this a zero if Amazon let me, but since Synology finally listened to their customers and as of DSM 7.3 they have removed the restrictions on third party drives. I just migrated to the DS1525+ and two DX525s from a DS1517+ and two DX517s populated entirely with Western Digital and Seagate drives and was up and running again in no time with no warnings. The only thing that required setting after the migration was the IP address and ports. If you compare the hardwar
Great NAS but limited Apple MacOS support A great full-featured NAS that just works and has terrific app support. I docked it a star because it doesn't work with AFP on any modern MacOS system, and that was one of my critical considerations for buying it. They should state they do not support AFP any longer in big bold letters. It seems to work OK with SMB but we'll see if I and when I get brave enough to set up a TimeMachine share.
You can use third party drives again! I was very hesitant about buying this, with the Synology lock in to their drives only. I was able to get my WD 12TB Purple drives working in it without errors.
Time Machine Backups broken Two things to be aware of if considering this NAS (and possibly any other 2026 Synology NAS):1. Although Synology now allows non-Synology hard drives, they do NOT allow non-Synology M.2 drives. So my plans for a disk cache with 2-M.2 drives I already own is out the window. Not at all clear from pre-sale documentation. I had to go into the weeds to find this:✓ Supported for:Migration from existing Synology systems✗ Not supported for:New installation and storage pool creationCache creation2. Time
